And I Heard the Mourner Say

What makes a story memorable? Indeed, the plot, the characters, and the writing all play a role, but great stories reveal the human heart. They show us truths about ourselves we need to understand and point us to a greater hope. These are the kinds of stories that stick with us. And I Heard the Mourner Say is one of those books, and the Kickstarter went live today.

You may say I am biased, and that would be true because the author is my son, but it truly is a compelling novel. When people ask me what it’s about, I can give them a basic overview and tell them it is about a simple woodsman whose sole desire is to do his work and care for his family, but life does not go as planned. I could tell you it is a story about life and the hand that guides us through it, but that is only scanning the surface of deep waters. I will let Mark give you his summary.

Ezekiel Cottrell is a kindhearted young man who desires to live a quiet life in his small rural mountain community. However, any expectations he has for his life are soon uprooted when he finds himself wrongfully accused of the murder of Thomas Kean.

But Here is what the story is really about. This book is about pain and loss and finding hope and purpose therein. It is about the irreverent decimation of goodness and the journey to find it again. And I Heard the Mourner Say is a story about life; it has love and hate, pain and redemption, and the ever-patient, beckoning hand of the Good Lord. It, when all has been said, and all has been done, is a story about deliverance.

A significant part of this project is the ink-pressed block print illustrations found within the book’s pages. Each image depicts a scene, a moment, a place, or an idea from the book. The block prints are hand-carved by Mark himself with the intention of bringing more life to the events of the story.

The book will be available in hardback and eBook through Kickstarter, but the only way to get the hardback is through Kickstarter. Once the fundraising campaign is complete, it will only be available in paperback and eBook formats.

If you want to help a writer get his first book off the ground and receive a great book in return, here is your chance. Visit the Kickstarter page to learn more.
