We live in a world full of revilers and mockers. Even Christians can fall into this behavior, but against the Lord and his people, there seems to be no limit to the blasphemies that come out of the mouths of men. It will soon come to an end.
In the book of Joshua, we find Israel surrounded by five kings set to destroy them, but the Lord fought Israel’s battle for them. First, he threw their enemies into a panic. Second, he caused large hailstones to fall and kill many of those who had come against his people, and finally, as the war raged on, God caused the sun and the moon to stand still in the sky so Israel could finish the job (Joshua 10:13).
When Joshua and his men entered the fortified city, it says of the enemies, “Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.” One day, the mocking will cease. The Lord will return in glory, and those not united to him in faith will be silenced.
Though this story in Joshua is an actual historical event, Joshua is also a picture of Jesus leading his people. It says that once the enemy was defeated, Joshua summoned the men of Israel to come near the five enemy kings who had been captured. He told the men to put their feet on the Kings’ necks (Joshua 10:24). Today, we live in a time when Jesus has already won the battle for his people, and he is seated at the Father’s right hand, waiting until his enemies are made his footstool.
Christian, though it will hurt when it happens, do not despair if the world mocks you and makes false accusations against you. One day, their tongues will stop. Not only will their reviling end, but every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).
What are we to do in the meantime? We are to trust in the victory that Christ has already won. Look to your King and live in union with him through faith. As for your enemies, love them, return blessings for curses, and speak the truth to them in love, even if the truth leads to more mocking. Living in Christ and speaking the truth is the only way to tell the world we love them and let them know of the salvation offered in Jesus.
Too many Christians and churches have gone silent on certain biblical truths to appease the mockers, but one day, all of their tongues will lay quiet, and all our efforts to mollify them will be exposed as foolish. We will have let lying tongues adulterate our proclamation of the truth. Never let mocking tongues silence you; their time is running out.
