Celebrating Christmas Between the Advents

Our thoughts are turning with gladness to the first coming of Jesus. The light that shone over the plains is shining around us; the songs which the shepherds heard, we also hear; and the New Hope that filled the hearts of the shepherds and wise men in the eastern land at the advent of Jesus is in our hearts at this time. Yet we are all conscious that nothing is perfect, that much of which he came to do is not yet done, and that the works of the devil are not finally destroyed, that sins are not yet experimentally taken away, that in the spiritual consciousness of the race, God is not yet perfectly known. Lost in the Glow of Christmas

So completely are we carried away by the excitement of this midwinter festival that we are apt to forget that its romantic appeal is the least significant thing about it. We must not forget that the Church is the custodian of a truth so grave and urgent that its importance cannot be overemphasized, and so … Continue reading Lost in the Glow of Christmas

Warning: False Prophets in Pulpits this Christmas

Many preachers today seem to know our anxieties, worries, and depression. When they speak, it is as if they know what we’re going through. We hang on their every word with bated breath, for it seems that the “secrets of our hearts are disclosed” (1 Cor 14:24-25). However, many of these preachers describe our hearts … Continue reading Warning: False Prophets in Pulpits this Christmas

He Shall Save His People From Their Sins

Many people have difficulty celebrating Christmas because of their pain and heartache. But for the Christian, the Lord often uses pain and sorrow to move us into a more profound celebration because we realize that the Child we are celebrating is our ultimate redemption from all pain and heartache. The following profound thought by G. … Continue reading He Shall Save His People From Their Sins

Christmas Joy Mingled with Sorrow

Even in the midst of Christmas merriment, we cannot help remembering those who have passed away. The longer we live, the more we feel to stand alone. The old faces will rise before the eyes of our minds, and the old voices will sound in our ears, even in the midst of holiday mirth and … Continue reading Christmas Joy Mingled with Sorrow

A Shepherd’s Encounter with Glory

The angels came from glory to announce the birth of Christ, but why did they appear to shepherds? Their testimony did not even count in a court of law. What would it have been like to hear the shepherds tell their story? Though we do not know what they said precisely, it might have sounded … Continue reading A Shepherd’s Encounter with Glory

The Two Sides of the Magnificat

The Magnificat, when Mary praises God after Gabriel tells her that she will be the mother of the Messiah, is a beautiful picture of the grace of God towards fallen humanity (Luke 1:46-56). But there is another side to the Magnificat ignored by many. Just as God is merciful to his children, he is righteous … Continue reading The Two Sides of the Magnificat

Celebrating Christmas with Jesus Himself

Too many of us celebrate the birth of Jesus while neglecting Christ himself. This negligence is because, though many of us would like to experience the joy of our salvation, our indulgence in worldliness cuts us off from it. We have lost the reason to celebrate. Many of us also desire the Lord to use … Continue reading Celebrating Christmas with Jesus Himself

Hope Shone Forth From An Infant Child: A Christmas Poem

Hope shone forth from an infant child,in the manger that cold dark night. In humility, God himself appeared mild, yet His plan moved forth in all its might. Salvation to humanity was born;the angels could not help but sing. This Infant Child would bear our scorn;the newborn Sovereign King. Helpless was mankind in sinuntil the star shone forth … Continue reading Hope Shone Forth From An Infant Child: A Christmas Poem

Sin, Sorrow, and the Joy of Christmas

The lights glow softly, the Christmas music plays, and wondrous thoughts of the birth of our Savior fill our minds. What a blessing it is for the believer who still finds childlike joy at this time of year. Being “grown-up” is a bit over-rated because being “grown-up,” according to the world, usually entails a constant stiff upper lip … Continue reading Sin, Sorrow, and the Joy of Christmas
